TAIPEI -- Calling Taiwan a global tipping point, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung vowed to answer U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's call for more military spending and stressed the need for a "democratic supply chain" in an exclusive interview.

"China's rise has posed a challenge to the rules-based international order, and Taiwan is a tipping point in the world's balance of power," Lin told Nikkei Asia in his first international media interview since taking his post in May. But he stressed that Taiwan is not just a "chess piece caught in the middle."
