TAIPEI -- Taipei's top China affairs official has warned that the government will not tolerate Beijing's active engagement solely with opposition politicians while it refuses dialogue with President Lai Ching-te's democratically elected administration.

Chiu Chui-cheng, the most senior minister in charge of relations with Beijing, told Nikkei Asia in an exclusive interview that Taiwan cannot turn a blind eye to what he described as Beijing's efforts to sow political division. "As for the visiting Taiwan Affairs Office personnel [from China], we will not allow them in as we did in the past," he said, suggesting that such visitors must be willing to meet with Lai administration officials "on the basis of equal dignity."
