TAIPEI -- The head of the Taiwan defense ministry's official think tank has urged the government and opposition to overcome their budget deadlock while backing U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's call to boost military spending.

"Pressure from Trump is only part of the story," Lee Wen-chung, a heavyweight in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, told Nikkei Asia in his first foreign media interview since his think tank appointment. "Essentially, given the increasingly severe threats facing Taiwan from China, our country should significantly increase defense spending."
