TOKYO -- As U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump head into the final stretch of their election campaigns, a former Trump administration defense official argues that the ex-president seeks not isolationism, but alliances that will truly benefit the American people.

Elbridge Colby, co-founder and principal at The Marathon Initiative, a Washington think tank, served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy and force development under Trump. Colby recently shared with Nikkei his insights on the views of both candidates ahead of Tuesday's debate.
