Japanese insurers pair with Verizon to gauge cyberattack risks

New service uses big data to put numbers on issues

TOKYO -- Japan's Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance are teaming up with Verizon Communications of the U.S. to launch a risk assessment service for cyberattacks next month.

The jointly developed service will mainly ask companies about their cybersecurity measures. Risks will be analyzed and quantified using Verizon data on more than 40,000 attacks, accidents and leaks. The survey will cover system vulnerabilities and weaknesses in information management in addition to such technological aspects as network surveillance.

Risk will also be broken down by industry, with plans provided for combating viruses, spyware, insiders and other threats in each field.

The trio will tap the knowledge of American security ratings provider BitSight Technologies as well.

Support in fixing weak points, such as through updating software and fortifying networks, will be available based on assessment results. The Japanese duo, siblings under MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, will also provide insurance in the event of an incident to reimburse businesses for damage and system repair costs.
