Kao boosts profit 16% in first quarter

Boosting diaper business yields results

Kao diapers continue their strong performance in China.

TOKYO -- Japanese consumer goods maker Kao reported Wednesday that first quarter profit increased 16% on the year to 24.1 billion yen ($216 million), giving it a good start for the fiscal year ending December.

"It's been a superb start," said Kenichi Yamauchi, an executive officer at Kao. Accounting for such effects as exchange rates, sales in its consumer products business jumped 6.2% on a real basis, absorbing increases in marketing and other costs. The operating profit margin increased by 1 percentage point to 11% compared to the same period last year.
