TOKYO -- Japan's former foreign minister Seiji Maehara and Yukio Edano, the former secretary-general of the Democratic Party, both announced on Monday that they would run for the party's leadership.

Former leader Renho resigned after the party was annihilated by Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike's party in the Japanese capital's assembly elections in early July.
