TOKYO -- Stock investors are stashing their funds behind wide economic moats, turning to companies whose entrenched market presence can deter competitors and guard against the ravages of U.S. policy.

"The trampoline stock market has entered its second act," said Mari Iwashita, chief market economist at SMBC Friend Securities.
