Mazda's net profit leaps 72% in first quarter on Chinese sales

But tough going in the US pushed down operating profit

TOKYO -- Mazda Motor's year-on-year net profit skyrocketed 72% in the quarter ended in June mainly due to Chinese demand and a weaker yen, the Japanese automaker said Wednesday.

The 36.6 billion yen ($331 million) profit far surpassed the 20.9 billion yen average estimate from analysts surveyed by QUICK.
