In multicultural Malaysia, every ethnic group has a special dish to mark important occasions on the national calendar, including beef rendang for Malays and mutton curry for Indians. For Malaysian Chinese celebrating Lunar New Year, which this year lasts for 15 days from Jan. 29, yee sang takes center stage.

This cherished salad dish symbolizes prosperity, and every ingredient carries meaning -- salmon for abundance, vegetables for growth, pomelo for good luck, crackers for wealth and sesame seeds for business prosperity. A sweet sauce ensures sweetness in life.
