Wafer supplier Sumco revs up with $394m capital investment

Riding wave of chip demand, Japanese company will add capacity for 300mm parts

Sumco will increase production of silicon ingots and wafers for semiconductors.

TOKYO -- Sumco, one of the world's top suppliers of silicon wafers for the semiconductor industry, will spend 43.6 billion yen ($394 million) to increase production capacity in its biggest investment in roughly a decade.

The new capacity will come online in the first half of 2019, the Tokyo-based company said Tuesday.
