FUKUSHIMA, Japan -- In late June, the city of Iwaki in Fukushima prefecture, Japan witnessed a breathtaking spectacle as acclaimed Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang unveiled his latest project, "When the Sky Blooms with Sakura."

The extraordinary scene consisted of a grand, 30-minute daytime display of 40,000 firework devices to honor the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that struck the area in March 2011. Unlike traditional nighttime displays, Cai's innovative approach utilized colorful smoke bombs. The entire fireworks display was made using nontoxic, biodegradable materials.
