TOKYO -- Sok Phorn was still a teenager when she moved to a refugee camp in Thailand with her family in 1979 after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime in her native Cambodia. There, she met her future husband.

When she turned 18, he proposed to her and gave her an embroidered lace cloth and a traditional Khmer silk skirt. Phorn brought the cloth, in an impressive green color, and the skirt with her when the family fled to Japan in 1987.
