SANUR, Indonesia -- The shores of the Indonesian island of Bali are awash with both tourists and plastic. While combing the temporarily deserted beaches during the pandemic, Ari Bayuaji, a Javanese artist, noticed an unlikely resource amid the trash.
Bayuaji invented a new upcycled material called ArtWeave by turning "ghost gear" -- the drifting discards of the fishing industry -- into refined textile art. His ongoing project, "Weaving the Ocean," entwines three messages: tackling sea pollution, reviving Bali's textile tradition, and supporting the autonomy of women.
