KUALA LUMPUR -- Once neglected both regionally and further afield, Malaysian films have gained attention and accolades on the international circuit in recent years. However, strict censorship laws and limited access to financing in the Southeast Asian country are proving to be formidable obstacles for many local filmmakers and actors hoping to develop their careers.
In May, "Tiger Stripes" (2023) a coming-of-age horror film directed by Amanda Nell Eu, won the Critics' Week Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, making it the first Southeast Asian film to win the prestigious award at the French event. On Oct. 5, the government selected the movie as Malaysia's entry in the best international feature film category for the upcoming 96th Academy Awards.
