Russian war refugees boost Kazakhstan's theater scene

New plays bring diversity and cater to all ages in different languages

ALMATY -- The theater scene in Kazakhstan's commercial capital is flourishing unexpectedly as a result of the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine, thanks to creative Russians and their families fleeing the draft.

Since the start of fighting in Ukraine in February 2022, many have moved to nearby Almaty -- where Russian is widely understood -- and found a sanctuary from where to tell their stories.
