HONG KONG -- A landscape painting by Vincent van Gogh fell short of expectations at Hong Kong Christie's sale on Thursday, as a sluggish Chinese economy weighed on demand for blue-chip art pieces in the region.

"Les canots amarres" (the moored boats), created in the summer of 1887 during the Dutch painter's stay in Paris, sold for HK$215 million ($27.6 million) before commission after two minutes of bidding, below the minimum presale estimate of HK$230 million.
