TOKYO -- I have long been convinced that Japanese toilets are the eighth wonder of the world, and it seems I am in good company. "Perfect Days," a Japanese film with a Japanese cast, is directed and co-written by the German auteur Wim Wenders. But its portrayal of Japanese public toilets is uniquely beautiful.

Starring the ever-watchable Koji Yakusho, who won the best actor award for his performance at this year's Cannes film festival, "Perfect Days" is Japan's entry in the best international feature film category in the 96th Oscars, which will be awarded in March 2024.
