GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia -- If it is true that no one is a prophet in his or her own land, Tan Twan Eng must have been moved in late July to find the hall of the Majestic Theatre in his native George Town packed with spectators. The audience came to support his literary homecoming, organized by the local Gerakbudaya Bookshop as part of this year's edition of the George Town Festival, a leading Malaysian arts and cultural event.
Fans old and new seemed spellbound as writer and bookseller Gareth Richards, actress Marina Tan and short-story writer Aoife Sacker Ooi read passages from Tan's latest book, "The House of Doors," released in May by Edinburgh-based publisher Canongate Books. The novel, Tan's third, was recently longlisted for the prestigious 2023 Booker Prize.
