BENGALURU, India -- This is a city that needs little introduction, given its growing fame as India's Silicon Valley and its increasingly important role as a hub for Asian technology and innovation.

Young people from across India move to Bengaluru, capital of the southern state of Karnataka, to work for global information technology companies such as Google, IBM and Microsoft. Others work at hundreds of call centers. The city, formerly known as Bangalore, also has one of the world's leading startup ecosystems, and popular Indian startups such as Rapido, a ride-hailing platform, and Swiggy, an online food-delivery system, are headquartered here.
