The Sydney Opera House at dawn: Australia's most populous city boasts iconic landmarks, a vibrant cultural scene and a mild climate year-round.

"We had the satisfaction of finding the finest harbour in the world," wrote British Captain Arthur Phillip, the first governor of Sydney, on discovering Sydney Harbor in 1788.

I felt the same way the first time I visited the city and saw the harbor during a road trip around Australia in the early 1990s; a few months later I moved there and stayed for 20 years. This scenic harbor city is also called the "Emerald City" for its 400 green parks.
