CHONGQING -- Tourism moves in mysterious ways. Trends in travel ebb and flow like a mighty river -- in this case, China's Yangtze, the longest river in Asia and the third longest on Earth.

The completion in 2015 of China's massive Three Gorges Dam has increased water depths on the Yangtze by an average of 50 meters, allowing a new generation of large cruise ships to offer four- to five-day river cruises, including a passage through the gorges -- still a big draw, even though their scenic wonder has diminished.
