BUSAN, South Korea -- Seoul has been a key engine in the process of introducing South Korea to outsiders. The capital is the economic and cultural hub of the country, and epitomizes its emerging image: high-tech, fast-paced and busy.

But Busan, the second-largest city, is fashioning a very different and appealing reputation.
