VADODARA, India -- It is a Saturday evening. Done with their day's work, Bhavna Padiyar, 32, and her sister, Kiran, 37, both domestic helpers in the western Indian city of Vadodara, are busy getting their house ready for the most important monthly event of their calendar: a kitty party.
Soon, dozens of women dressed in bright colors arrive and are crammed into the sisters' living room. The chatter is loud, riding over a Bollywood song playing on the radio. A makeshift table in the hall is laden with varied farsan snacks.
