ANITA RAO KASHI

BENGALURU -- In the hills of India's northern state of Uttarakhand, amid forests of conifers and sal trees and in sight of the snowcapped peaks of the Himalayan mountains, Vidisha is walking in a way that is neither purposeful nor aimless, but somewhere in-between.

She has no end point in view; her focus is on the dappled shade on the grassy ground, the birdcalls she hears, the dried leaves crunching under her feet, the crisp mountain air she breathes and the sappy smell of the trees. This is the five-sense (see, hear, touch, taste and smell) technique of mindfulness, suggested by her therapist to keep at bay the grief that threatens to engulf her.
