DEMOSO, Myanmar -- Six-year-old Jasmine does not understand why on Feb. 5 the sky suddenly crashed down on her school in a village close to Demoso, a small town in northwestern Kayah state. Four of her friends died instantly, while she and a 2-year-old boy were seriously injured. No one can explain to her that the thunder was caused by a Myanmar army jet.

When he heard the explosions, Jasmine's father, Ko Yone Lay, rushed to the school on a motorbike and found her covered in blood in her teacher's arms. He grabbed her and, with one hand on the throttle, the other around her waist, reached a pickup truck which drove her a few hours to Luke Hospital, a medical facility hidden in the jungle.
