TOKYO -- Daim Zainuddin, Malaysia's former economic czar who guided the country through financial crises and whose attempts to nurture Malay capitalists led to government bailouts, died on Nov. 13 at the age of 86.
His reputation for being former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's chief confidante was tarnished in the months before his death, when he was charged by the country's anti-graft agency with not declaring assets.
