TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tsuneo Watanabe, a media baron known for wielding influence over Japanese politics through The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, died of pneumonia on Thursday, his company said. He was 98.

Watanabe, a representative director and editor-in-chief of the world's largest-circulation daily, had close ties with former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone and a number of other powerful Japanese political figures.
