TOKYO -- Osamu Suzuki, the former chairman of Suzuki Motor, lifted the Japanese automaker from relative obscurity to a unique position that no major global rival could emulate.

Scrappy and determined, Suzuki hated to lose. The former chairman, who died at the age of 94 on Wednesday, led the company with that fighting spirit.
