TOKYO -- The Tata Group bans bribery, which is widely practiced in India, avoids donating funds to any specific political party, passes a portion of its profits on to society and otherwise operates under a management code that strongly reflects the life philosophy of Ratan Tata, the conglomerate's fifth chairman.

"I always think about what I can do for Indian people," Ratan used to say. He was a business leader who committed to the spirit of service to his country while pursuing profit.
