Japan looks to serve up pro table tennis league

Home teams could put new spin on sport

Ai Fukuhara, a table tennis sensation since childhood, remains one of the sport's biggest Asian stars.

TOKYO -- Japan's table tennis governing body is preparing to start a professional league to broaden the sport's appeal to fans and sponsors.

The move comes as interest in the sport runs high in Japan. The national team came home with three medals from this year's Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and is looking ahead to when Tokyo hosts the games in four years.
