Japanese chip equipment makers share caution for fiscal 2016

Tokyo Electron expects strong demand for equipment used to make cutting-edge chips, but most equipment manufacturers in Japan think chipmakers may curtail capital investment.

TOKYO -- Major Japanese manufacturers of chipmaking equipment appear wary of their customers curbing capital investment this fiscal year as smartphone sales slow.

All seven leading players released fiscal 2015 results by Wednesday, and five of them logged net profit growth. But four of the five that issued forecasts for fiscal 2016 project a profit decline.
