Takashimaya still happily riding tourist spending wave

Japanese department store is eclipsing rivals on demand for duty-free sales

The number of foreign customers visiting Takashimaya's Shinjuku outlet in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward remains on an upward trend.

TOKYO -- Major Japanese department store operator Takashimaya continues to cash in on foreign tourists' consumption with its sales of duty-free goods humming along and far outperforming the market.

In February, Takashimaya's sales of duty-free goods to foreign visitors surged a robust 34% year-on-year, while the department store industry as a whole saw such sales grow only 10% on average.
