COP29 is our best chance to address the devastation of climate change

Record heatwaves and rainfalls underscore Asia's vulnerability

Mukhtar Babayev is president-designate of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November. He is also Azerbaijan's minister of ecology and natural resources.

The urgent need to keep the 1.5 degrees Celsius target within reach has never been more apparent. The extreme weather events of recent years -- heatwaves, floods, and typhoons -- have made it abundantly clear that the time for incremental progress has passed. Asia, home to some of the world's most vulnerable communities, understands this urgency all too well.
