'Green tech partnership' offers way to de-risk while decarbonizing

Dependence on China carries supply risks beyond just geopolitics

Alicia Garcia-Herrero is chief economist for Asia-Pacific at investment bank Natixis in Hong Kong and a senior research fellow at policy research think tank Bruegel in Brussels. Heather Grabbe is a senior fellow at Bruegel and a visiting professor with the University College London European Institute and the Leuven International and European Studies program of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium.

Many Western governments are now wrestling with the dilemma of how to secure the solar panels, batteries and wind power equipment required for their emission reduction plans while also reducing reliance on China, the primary source of many of these green technologies.
