Regional election a setback for Widodo as presidential poll looms

Indonesian leader may need Islamic-party running mate to boost support next year

Indonesia's regional elections, held on June 27, appear not to have produced a big winner but analysis of the preliminary results suggests that the party most entitled to rue the outcome is President Joko Widodo's PDIP.

As the next presidential election will take place in just over eight months, it was widely hoped that the results of this week's elections for governors, mayors and regents would give an accurate forecast of the 2019 poll.
