Anthony Albanese's recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping marked the first visit to China by an Australian prime minister in seven years. The leaders agreed to normalize diplomatic relations, which had greatly deteriorated over a dispute about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While this thaw is good for regional stability, China's foreign policy remains riddled with problems, including Beijing's aggressive maritime expansion and economic coercion of governments that do not toe its policy line. As such, Canberra should maintain an appropriate distance from Beijing.
