Restrictions on private industry work against stability sought by Communist Party

As the uncertainty around the Chinese economy's outlook deepens, the government led by President Xi Jinping must recognize the compounding policy effects that have helped to bring on the slowdown, and come up with effective measures to counter it.

China's economy grew a real 8.1% in 2021, rebounding from a sluggish 2020. But growth slowed markedly in the second half and came to 4% on the year for the fourth quarter. While restrictions spurred by a resurgence in coronavirus infections were a factor, they were not the only one.
