China's expanded counterespionage law will take effect in July, enabling the authorities to crack down on a wide range of activities deemed related to "national security and interests."
Not only will a broader definition of espionage impact the safety of foreign nationals working in China, but expanding the law will also stifle cross-border economic activity and cause more foreign capital to leave the country.
