The European Union has decided to begin negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the multilateral bloc. The country's application was filed immediately after the Russian invasion in 2022 and tabled in less than two years -- an unusually fast pace. By trying to bring Ukraine into its fold, the EU wants to show the world its dedication to protecting democracy and the rule of law.
There will be many challenges to realizing Ukrainian membership in the EU, and Europe's unity regarding values will be tested.
