The rest of the world was stunned by U.S. President Donald Trump's way of shoving through his demand for high tariffs. He should look squarely at the fact that his policy has thrown the world into turmoil and tarnished international trust in the U.S.

In a letter to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Trump said the U.S. will charge 25% levies on Japanese products shipped to the U.S., starting on Aug. 1. The rate is higher than the 24% announced by the U.S. administration in April.
