The U.S. administration of President Donald Trump is ramping up pressure on academics and the scientific community by suspending funding for universities and research institutes.

By clamping down on scholars who do not follow its orders, the administration's actions remind us of oppression in Nazi Germany as well as in China during the Cultural Revolution. Such behavior will undermine the competitiveness of the U.S. and have an adverse impact on other Western countries. The administration must immediately stop its excessive political interference.
