New South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol's desire to strengthen the U.S.-South Korean alliance, as well as trilateral security cooperation with Japan, is a breath of fresh air.

The country's first conservative leader in five years, Yoon seeks to establish trust with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Rebuilding South Korea-Japan relations, considered to be at their worst since diplomatic normalization, will be among the many challenges he faces.
