Renewed speculation over the prospect that the U.S. will persuade Russia to loosen its embrace of China overlooks two major considerations. One is that Moscow has abundant reasons to strengthen its relationship with Beijing, even if it seeks ways to work better with Washington. The second is that U.S. President Donald Trump seems less interested in driving a wedge between the U.S.'s two principal competitors than in working with them to carve the world into spheres of influence.
