For years, economists within China and beyond its borders have called on Beijing to stimulate the country's slowing economic growth by encouraging households to spend. These recommendations have fallen on the deaf ears of an ideological regime that prefers to act on the supply side. Over time, inevitably, the imbalance has only worsened.
