Bank of Japan reports first drop in monetary base under Kuroda

Tally down 4.1% in January as the central bank curbs bond purchases

TOKYO -- The Bank of Japan's pivot toward rate controls as the centerpiece of its ultraloose monetary policy has led the monetary base to decrease for the first time during Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda's tenure.
