China desperately trying to avert economic slide

SHANGHAI -- China is making delicate policy adjustments to forestall a downturn in the world's second-largest economy.

The government will on Wednesday announce the nation's economic growth for the January-March period. According to a joint survey by The Nikkei and Nikkei Quick News, China's real gross domestic product grew an estimated 7.3% on the year, down from 7.7% for the previous three-month period.
