TOKYO -- Japan's real gross domestic product declined 0.4% in January from the previous month, the Japan Center for Economic Research said Wednesday.
Housing investment slid 1.4%, while exports fell 0.4%. External demand -- or exports minus imports -- dragged down GDP by 0.3 percentage point, and domestic demand lowered it 0.1 point.
Consumer spending edged up, albeit less than 0.1%, bolstered by a 0.3% rise in new-car sales volume. Capital spending grew 0.7%.
