Japan to help train, equip Sri Lanka's coast guard

TOKYO -- Japan will offer Sri Lanka aid for maritime safety, seeking deeper ties with a country that occupies a key juncture along sea lanes linking East Asia with overseas resources and markets.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will announce the initiative next month when he visits the Indian Ocean nation and meets with its president, Mahinda Rajapaksa.
