Philippine President Duterte to visit Japan in June

Meeting between president and Prime Minister Abe is being arranged

TOKYO -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will visit Japan in early June.

Japan and the Philippines are making arrangements for a meeting between the president and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during Duterte's visit to discuss regional security issues, such as territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

The president is scheduled to speak at the 23rd International Conference on the Future of Asia, which is hosted by Nikkei Inc., on June 5 and 6 in Tokyo.

It will be Duterte's second visit to Japan since becoming president in June 2016. He visited Japan in October last year.

Duterte is enjoying an approval rating of over 70% thanks in part to his outspoken character. But he is also being criticized by the international community for his heavy-handed approach to governing, such as the extrajudicial killings of drug suspects.

Duterte has been eager to improve relations with China, with which his country has a territorial dispute in the South China Sea.

The conference will also be attended by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith. The theme of the conference is globalism at a crossroads, and participants will discuss security and trade issues, among other topics.
